5 Minute Coconut Margarita (Silky Smooth)
This shaken coconut margarita recipe comes together in 5 minutes and has the perfect silky smooth texture thanks to a double strain. This creamy cocktail is infused with coconut milk, lime juice, and that classic margarita combo of tequila and orange liqueur. It’s the perfect drink to serve during the warm summer months.
There’s something about adding coconut to a classic cocktail that does it for me every time. A few ounces of coconut milk is a simple, yet effective switch up that adds a sweetness and creamy texture to any drink.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m always down for a classic margarita, but there’s something about this addition that takes things to a tropical, creamy rich place.
Plus, making this coconut margarita requires the same minimal effort as a traditional margarita. Toss everything into a shaker and shake well before straining for a super silky smooth texture.
Bonus points if you get fancy with a lime slice garnish and some sugar or coconut flakes on the rim of your glass.
If you’re as excited as I am about the flavor coconut adds to cocktails, be sure to try this coconut mojito, a piña colada on the rocks, and the Puerto Rican classic, coquito.

Let’s Make a Coconut Margarita!
Tip: Double straining with a mesh strainer helps to remove any solids, especially when using thicker ingredients like coconut milk.
Why Strain?
If you’ve ever worked with coconut milk from a can before, you know the consistency can be a combination of solid and liquid. This is because the cream tends to solidify and separate from the water.
A great way to ensure a smooth, creamy end result in your coconut margarita is to use the straining tool attached to your cocktail shaker or a mesh strainer before serving. This simple step will remove all solids from the cocktail, giving it that delicious silky smooth texture we all know and love.
If you’d like to skip this step, I recommend using coconut milk from a carton (typically sold as a creamer or milk) instead of a can. Shake well before using!
Tasty Pairings
This tropical drink goes well with just about anything off the grill, chips and salsa or guac, fresh fruit, you name it.

Bartending Tools
Here’s a shortlist of the tools that help when making a coconut margarita:
- Cocktail shaker: If you don’t have one of these, you can replicate one with two identical tall glasses. Combine ingredients in one glass and use the other glass as a lid while shaking. Just be careful as this technique can leak a bit.
- Small strainer: While most cocktail shakers have a straining mechanism on the top piece, I recommend using a mesh strainer in addition to this, for a silky smooth finish.
- Fun glassware: This one is totally optional, but there’s something about drinking a homemade cocktail out of a cute glass that just elevates the experience. Stick to a traditional margarita glass or go crazy with something in your collection!
