Agua de Pepino con Limon (Cucumber Lime Agua Fresca)
Agua de Pepino con Limon is a super refreshing agua fresca made with fresh cucumbers, lime juice, sugar, and water. This traditional Mexican drink has a well balanced tangy sweetness that’s paired perfectly with the light fresh flavors of the cucumber. It’s the prefect drink for a hot day!
Agua frescas come in all different colors and flavor profiles, gaining origin from the Aztecs in Mexico. Originally said to have been made with muddled fruit and water, they’ve been celebrated as a source of refreshment and hydration for centuries.
It’s no wonder people continue to recreate this traditional drink to this day (I’m looking at you, spa water.) But it’s totally silly to share these kinds of recipes without taking a second to appreciate the rich culture they came from.
The agua de pepino (cucumber water) con limon we’re blending up today is one of the most popular, universally loved for it’s crisp flavors and subtle tangy sweetness.
Plus, it comes together in 10 minutes with 4 easy to find ingredients (cucumber, lime, sugar, and water).
Served alongside a bowl of shrimp ceviche and fried plantain chips, it’s a party I am always down to be a part of.
4 Easy Ingredients
Here’s a quick look at the grocery list to get you started:
- cucumbers
- limes – I recommend using fresh limes whenever possible, but store-bought lime juice works in a pinch
- sugar – you can substitute this with agave or a sugar alternative of choice, or skip it all together
- water

How to Make Cucumber Lime Agua Fresca
To Peel or Not to Peel? It’s up to you whether you’d like to leave some of the cucumber peel on or off. I like leaving some on for a boost in flavor and color, but it’s perfectly fine to peel them completely or not at all. Remember any solids will be strained out in the end.
Knockout Food Pairings
Looking for something tasty to serve with your cucumber lime agua fresca? This refreshing Mexican drink goes great with just about anything, but especially dishes that feature similar flavor profiles.
I recommend tortilla chips with a bowl of super lime-y guacamole, tacos al pastor, fresh ceviche, and just about anything featuring seafood. Is your mouth watering yet or is it just me?!

Easy Additions
There are many variations of agua de pepino out here and I’ve yet to meet one I didn’t like. Because of the simplicity of this recipe, it’s pretty hard to mess it up.
Here are some ideas for adding a twist:
- Use a sweeter kind of citrus as a substitute for sugar to give it a more natural sweet flavor
- Add some tajin (or jalapeno) to the rim of your glass or to the pitcher for some spice
- Toss some fresh mint or basil to the blender for an herbal note
Leftover Storage
This drink makes excellent leftovers for up to 5 days. It’s one of those recipes that feels like a gift every time you open your fridge!
I like to save the ice for serving to prevent the flavors of this cucumber lime agua fresca from getting watered down.
I recommend storing any leftovers in the fridge in an air tight container and adding ice only to individual servings.

Description
Agua de Pepino con Limon is a super refreshing agua fresca made with fresh cucumbers, lime juice, sugar, and water. This traditional Mexican drink has a well balanced tangy sweetness that’s paired perfectly with the light fresh flavors of the cucumber. It’s the prefect drink for a hot day!
Ingredients
- 4 cups cucumbers, roughly peeled and chopped
- 1/2 cup lime juice (about 5 limes)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 6 cups cold water
- optional: extra cucumber & lime slices for garnish
Instructions
- Blend ingredients together. In a large blender combine chopped cucumber, lime juice, sugar, and as much of the 6 cups of water that will fit. Don’t worry if you can’t fit it all as whatever is left can be added later. Blend until large chunks are liquified.
- Strain out solids. Pour the contents of the blender into a large pitcher, straining out solids through a mesh strainer or piece of cheese cloth. Add any additional water that didn’t fit in the blender.
- Garnish & serve. Add extra slices of cucumber and lime to the pitcher, if desired. Serve the agua de pepino over ice, and enjoy!
