It’s no secret that my mom and I love Piña Coladas.

To be fair, we love pretty much all Puerto Rican recipes; but this is one we always bonded over, even when I was too young to try the real deal.

My mom made sure I never missed out on the tropical fun, with these alcohol free pineapple coconut smoothies. She’d make her traditional recipe, with all the same ingredients, except the rum.

I was always so impressed by how quickly they came together, and with such simple ingredients. And when I went off to college, I remember impressing my friends by whipping them up with ease, putting their store bought mixes to shame.

And to this day, I love enjoying my own version of this breakfast smoothie with a bit of yogurt for the protein boost.

I’m a huge fan of sipping this silky smooth smoothie on a hot summer day or during the colder months to make myself feel closer to the island.

What You’ll Need to Make This Breakfast Smoothie

Here’s everything you’ll need to make this piña colada breakfast smoothie:

  • Coconut milk 🥥: A popular ingredient in many Puerto Rican recipes, as the coconut fruit can be found all across the island.
  • Frozen pineapple chunks 🍍: You can also use fresh pineapple, just make sure to freeze the chunks to help with that signature smoothie texture we all know and love!
  • Plain or vanilla greek yogurt 🥛: This ingredient is my own addition, as it helps to boost the creaminess and adds some protein to the end result. I usually go for plain yogurt, but feel free to use vanilla (or your favorite flavor).
  • Ice 🧊: This one feels self explanatory 🙂
  • Optional toppings 🍒: A slice of fresh pineapple, a single maraschino cherry, or a sprinkle of coconut flakes can really help make you feel that much closer to the beach, you know?
