Agua de Jamaica is one of those drinks that you try once and never forget. With a unique blood-red color and tart flavor reminiscent of a cherry or cranberry juice, it’s super refreshing served chilled over lots of ice.

This vibrant iced tea is super popular across Mexico, with roots in Africa and Jamaica. I love sharing a pitcher with friends in the hot summer months during a backyard BBQ (serve with pollo asado, ensalada de papa, and fruit salad for a real party).

This cold hibiscus tea is especially delicious steeped with honey to compliment the natural sweetness of the dried hibiscus flowers.

What You Need

Step by Step Instructions

Tip: Taste your tea before it cools to see if you’re happy with the level of sweetness. Add more honey, if desired.

Optional: Add A Squeeze of Lime

Add a squeeze of lime juice to your agua de jamaica if you’d like to amp up the naturally tangy flavors of the dried hibiscus flowers.

I recommend using a teaspoon for a single serving or a quarter cup for a pitcher.

How to Use the Steeped Flowers

If you’re anything like me, you’re always looking for fun ways to reduce food waste. As mentioned before, it’s up to you whether you’d like to strain out the flowers from your Agua de Jamaica before serving or not.

If you do, you can freeze them in ice cube trays and blend them up in smoothies or simmer with sugar and water to make an super tasty flavored simple syrup for cocktails and more!

You can also simmer them with lemon juice, sugar and water to make a quick refrigerator jam.

Description

Brew up a batch of this bright red Agua de Jamaica to enjoy all week long! It’s easy to make a single serving or pitcher to share with friends, with just 3 simple ingredients (dried hibiscus flowers, honey, and water). This beautiful iced hibiscus drink is vibrant in color and flavor.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For a Pitcher (serves 5):

  • 1/3 cup dried hibiscus flowers
  • 5 tbsp honey
  • 5 cups water

For a Single Serving:

  • 1 tbsp dried hibiscus flowers
  • 1 tbsp honey (or sugar)
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Measure hibiscus flowers and honey. Add the dried hibiscus flowers to a pitcher or mug while a kettle of water heats to a light boil.
  2. Steep, strain & chill. Add hot water to the pitcher or mug and stir with a spoon. Taste to see if you’d like to add more honey for a sweeter tea. Let the tea steep and cool before transferring to the fridge. Strain out the hibiscus flowers before serving chilled.

Notes

Note: Straining out the hibiscus flowers is optional, as they are edible. It’s up to your preference.

Optional: Add ¼ cup of lime juice to the finished tea (or a squeeze to a single serving) for a tangy compliment to this subtly sweet and sour hibiscus drink.
