30-Minute Fried Taro Chips (Oven & Air Fryer Instructions Too!)
Learn how to make your own perfectly crispy fried taro chips in under 30-minutes! They’re even better than the kind you buy at the store and made with only three ingredients: taro root, oil, and salt. Keep reading for additional instructions on how to make these in the air fryer & oven.
These incredibly crispy homemade taro chips are a real treat to serve as a snack, appetizer or side dish. The root provides a subtly sweet & nutty flavor that’s delicious paired with the salty crunch of these chips.
If you’ve never tried taro before, it’s a starchy tuberous root vegetable that’s used around the world in a variety of ways. It can be found boiled, steamed, fried, and even sometimes used in desserts and drinks. One of my favorite uses of taro in Puerto Rican cuisine is in Pasteles.
In this recipe, the root is peeled, then sliced into thin chips that get fried to perfection (or oven baked or air fried – more on that later!). The result is similar to taro chips you can find in the grocery store, but way better.
If you’re able to get your hands on the root (I found mine at Safeway), it’s a recipe you have to try.
I like serving these with a dipping sauce like mayoketchup or cilantro lime sauce.

How to Fry Taro Chips
How to Bake or Air Fry Taro Chips
Tip: Make sure to check on your chips every 5 minutes or so, to make sure they aren’t too golden or crispy. Because many of our ovens and air fryers can vary in accuracy, these chips are easy to burn!
Peeling Taro Root
When it comes to peeling your taro root, a sharp knife is your best friend! Trim the ends then use a knife or peeler to peel away that rough exterior peel.
Fried vs. Air Fried vs. Oven Baked
I would be lying if I said that anything beats a fried taro chip. It really is the best method to get evenly cooked, perfectly crispy chips! For this reason, I do recommend using the fry method over any other.
Thankfully the air fried and oven baked methods make a pretty tasty alternative if that’s your preference!
The main differences between making your taro chips in the oven vs. in the air fryer is in the cooking temp and time.
Using the air fryer requires only around 10-15 minutes of cook time at 350°, while the conventional oven requires 20-25 minutes at 375° to crisp up.
I also recommend checking the chips more frequently when air frying, and even giving the basket a shake or flipping the chips at the half-way mark, for a perfectly cooked end result.
Tasty Dipping Sauces
Who doesn’t love a good chips & dip combo? Here are a few of my favorite dipping sauces to serve with these homemade chips:
Special Equipment
The easiest way to achieve uniform chips is to use a mandolin. This kitchen tool is wonderful for slicing fruits and veggies.
That said, it’s really important to be careful when using this tool as the blade is extremely sharp and is known to cause accidents in the kitchen. It’s also important to note that the taro root can have a slippery texture to it, which means it’s necessary to be very careful while slicing. Many mandolins will come with a safety tool and/or glove to add separation between your hand and the blade; a really wonderful invention!
If you aren’t comfortable using a mandolin, I recommend sharpening your knife and really taking your time to make sure your taro chips are equal in thickness.
The more equal your slices, the more evenly your chips will bake!

Description
Learn how to make your own perfectly crispy taro chips in just 30-minutes! They’re even better than the kind you buy at the store and made with only three ingredients: taro root, oil, and salt. Keep reading for instructions on how to make these in the air fryer & oven.
Ingredients
Ingredients for Fried Taro Chips:
- 4 cups oil (avocado, vegetable, canola, etc.)
- 1/2 lb taro root, rinsed & dried
- 1 tsp salt
Ingredients for Baked/Air Fried Taro Chips:
- 1/2 lb taro root, rinsed & dried
- 1 tbsp oil (avocado, vegetable, canola, etc.)
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
For Fried Taro Chips:
- Heat oil in a pot & peel taro. Heat your oil to 350°F. Trim both ends of the taro before carefully removing the peel with a sharp knife or peeler. I recommend rinsing the root off after peeling.
- Slice the taro. Using a mandolin or sharp knife, carefully slice the taro into thin chips. Take your time here to make sure the slices are even in size and be especially careful not to cut yourself.
- Fry the chips. Fry the chips in batches, making sure to not crowd the pot. Fry until light golden brown and crispy all around, around 5-8 minutes.
- Drain excess oil & season with salt. Transfer the chips to a paper towel lined plate to drain any excess oil and sprinkle generously with salt. Enjoy!
For Baked/Air Fried Taro Chips:
- Preheat oven or air fryer & peel the taro. Preheat your oven to 375°F or air fryer to 350°F. Trim both ends of the taro before carefully removing the peel with a sharp knife or peeler. I recommend wearing gloves while peeling the root.
- Slice the taro. Using a mandolin or sharp knife, carefully slice the taro into thin chips. Take your time to make sure the slices are even in size and be careful not to cut yourself.
- Coat with oil & salt. Toss the chips with oil and salt, making sure they’re coated on both sides. Line a baking sheet or the air fryer basket with parchment paper and arrange the chips so they don’t overlap. This may require two baking sheets or a few batches in the air fryer.
- Bake until crispy. Bake the chips until crispy and light golden brown, about 20-25 minutes in the oven or 10-15 in the air fryer. Season with additional salt directly out of the oven, if desired. Enjoy!
