While summer isn’t quite here yet, there’s no reason you can’t manifest some sunshine with a pitcher of this classic red sangria!

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting Spain or Portugal during the warmer months, you know all about this popular cocktail. Kind of like Tinto de Verano, it’s a wine based beverage that’s best served chilled.

This traditional Spanish version uses a few spoonfuls of sugar, whole cinnamon sticks, fresh citrus juice and a cheap bottle of red.

Serve alongside some classic Spanish tapas like Patatas Bravas and Croquetas de Jamón.

How to Make Sangria: 3 Simple Steps

Cointreau: For an extra citrusy punch, stir an ounce or two of Cointreau into the pitcher after chilling.

Picking the Right Red

Forget everything you thought you knew about wine when picking the wine for your sangria!

For a well balanced cocktail, we want a young wine that’s low in tannins. Something fruity, but not overpowering. Cheap red wine is the way to go here!

Names to look for in the wine section: Tempranillo, Merlot, Rioja, Garnacha, Malbec.

Units Scale
  • 1 bottle red wine (use a younger wine, low in tannins)
