The Easiest / Most Delicious Appetizer
If you’ve ever invited me to a potluck, you’re probably rolling your eyes because these caprese salad skewers with a balsamic glaze come with me almost every time.
Their only true competition is my Goat Cheese Crostini with Bacon, Pomegranates & a Balsamic Glaze. Can you guess what the common ingredient is?
If you haven’t had a chance to try out this seriously amazing condiment, it’s about time you found yourself some balsamic glaze.
This stuff goes great drizzled on just about anything; pizza, salads, a soggy piece of cardboard… you name it! It adds a sweetness to everything you use it on and is ridiculously easy to make.
Follow the recipe below to make your own and remember: you can always halve, double or triple the recipe to meet your needs.
To make the balsamic glaze, pour 1/4 cup of balsamic vinegar into a saucepan and reduce by half. Set aside to cool and keep in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Balsamic glaze is becoming easier to find at most grocery stores. I have a bottle I bought from Trader Joe’s for about $3. Here is a bottle I found on Amazon that looks pretty great.
The cheese element of this recipe is pretty important as well, so I’m taking a minute to talk to you about these teeny tiiiiny Mozzarella balls.
That’s right, the smaller the better when making these caprese salad skewers. I usually buy mine at… (drum roll please) Trader Joe’s. Are you noticing a trend in my shopping habits?
While the small mozzarella balls add a pretty cute touch to these caprese salad skewers, they aren’t always easy to find. You can try looking for them at a fancy grocery store. If you’re here in Portland, my favorite one is New Seasons Market but if not, you could try Whole Foods.
If you have no luck there or 0 patience for visiting 3 stores for some small cheese balls, buy a log of mozzarella, cut it into small cubes, and call it a day!

Caprese Salad Skewers with a Balsamic Glaze
- Prep Time: 20 minutes
- Total Time: 25 minutes
- Yield: 24 servings 1x

- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp balsamic glaze (R 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar – see notes for directions)
- 24 leaves basil
- 24 balls mozzarella
- 24 cherry tomatoes
- 24 toothpicks
- Create an assembly line of the toothpicks, tomatoes, basil and cheese.
- In whatever order you like, add the three ingredients to the toothpicks (I like to do tomatoes, basil leaf, cheese).
- Repeat the steps until you’ve used all your ingredients.
- Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic glaze.
