Homemade Caramel Sauce: A Modified Family Recipe

When I first started eliminating my allergens, I was seriously distraught trying to find any kind of store bought caramel that didn’t have added soy.

Thankfully, my mom reminded me how easy it is to make your own! This homemade caramel sauce originated from my mom’s classic flan recipe.

Growing up, she was the one who taught me how to bake. She was always open to trying new recipes and helping me to recreate my favorite pastries and cookies from our favorite local bakeries. But her specialty was always flan.

If you’ve ever had the traditional Spanish dessert, you know it has an amazing caramel sauce that is lick-the-bowl-clean delicious.

And this recipe I’m sharing today is every bit as tasty, with the addition bit of butter and heavy cream that makes it the ultimate smooth and creamy homemade caramel sauce.

How to Make It

This 3 ingredient caramel sauce is as easy to make as it is addicting.

Start by melting your sugar (get my go-to baking sugar here) in a saucepan over medium heat. It’s very important that your saucepan is 100% dry for this step – any moisture can disturb the melting process of your sugar).

When you notice the sugar is completely melted and smooth, you can turn off the heat and mix in the butter and heavy cream.

Finally, you can add some flake salt to create a salted caramel taste if you’re into that kind of thing.

And that’s it! Who needs store bought sauce when the real deal is this easy to make?
