Why Eating Out Can Be Hard

Eating out with food allergies can sometimes feel like a game of Russian Roulette. There simply isn’t enough awareness about how to avoid cross contamination in restaurant kitchens and as a result, the average restaurant is not allergy friendly.

Luckily, there are more and more allergy friendly restaurants popping up around the country every day, especially here in the Portland Metro Area.

My Top 5 Allergy Friendly Restaurants

Let’s dive right in, here are the top 5 allergy friendly restaurants in Portland, Oregon:

  1. Harlow (click to visit their website)

Taken From Harlow’s Instagram Page

Why I love this spot:

Harlow is a pretty popular spot serving breakfast-dinner, with two separate locations in Portland. They have a variety of drinks (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and vegan/gluten free options.

This allergy friendly restaurant takes the extra step to support and work with other local distributors in the area.

What to order:

Hawthorne Mac (Vegan & Gluten Free)

2. New Cascadia (click to visit their website)

Why I love this spot:

I found New Cascadia when I was cooking in Ahara Ghee’s kitchen down by the Portland waterfront. It was within reasonable walking distance for my lunch breaks and just happened to have the most amazing gluten free pizza I have ever tasted. This is no exaggeration. They also make gluten free cinnamon rolls, pizza dough to go, scones, you  name it. This place is a gluten free dream.

What to order:

The Slice of the Day Pizza – just trust them (Gluten Free, Soy Free)

3. Bob’s Red Mill (click to visit their website)

Taken from Bob’s Red Mill’s Yelp Page

Why I love this spot:

I am obsessed with all things Bob’s Red Mill so you can imagine my excitement when I found out they have a real life restaurant operating less than 30 miles from my door. This allergy friendly restaurant is truly the best of both worlds as it has a fully operating restaurant paired with a store where you can find all of your favorite Bob’s Red Mill products and more. Needless to say, I could spend hours inside of this place.

This allergy friendly restaurant is one of my favorites because it doesn’t have to try too hard. It’s real, simple food with a few of their classic ingredients used to make things allergy friendly. They have vegan, gluten free and vegetarian options that are clearly labeled on the menus.

What to order:

I’m a huge fan of their omelettes but I have to go with the Baked Potato with Chili and Cheese

4. Laughing Planet (click to visit their website)

Why I love this spot:

I first found out about Laughing Planet when my fiancé Steve took me there. He couldn’t stop raving about how impressed he was with how their food was so healthy and yet also so well balanced and full of flavor.

This allergy friendly restaurant has a few different locations and has a wide variety of menu options for just about any dietary restriction you could imagine.

What to order:

The Paleo Bowl

5. New Seasons Market (click to visit their website)

Taken from New Seasons Market’s Instagram page

Why I love this spot:

So technically this is a grocery store, but their deli/prepared food game is on a whole other level so they deserve some acknowledgement here. I have loved New Seasons Market ever since moving to Oregon in 2015. Not only are they a local grocery store, they also have several locations and stellar customer service. I always leave that store with a smile and something exciting planned for the kitchen.

Did I mention I also always leave that store with a treat or two? They have an impressive bakery, plenty of gluten free baked good options, a deli with pre-prepared dinners (gluten free and vegan options available). If you’re in a hurry and need to get your shopping and dinner done in one trip, this is the allergy friendly restaurant for you.

What to order:

Cheese, salami, olives, bread, wine, you name it! Follow your stomach.
